Well-conceived
and well executed, they can boost an organization’s productivity enormously.
What does it take to do measurement right? Training measurement services tell us
that it is critical to:
- Establish Relevant Business Objectives: Establish the goal upfront. Know what you want to learn from the measurement before you even begin and make sure that it is 100% aligned with the priorities of the business.
- Commit to Making the Changes the Results Recommend. Do not survey the work force out of simple curiosity. Be prepared to invest in whatever actions you need to take for performance improvement. If you are not prepared to commit upfront, your business objectives are not important enough compared to other priorities to proceed.
- Get Buy-In Before You Start: Communicate the purpose of the measurement to all concerned and gain their buy-in and cooperation for the ongoing process. Make sure that all stakeholders understand how they will benefit from the assessment…they need to know what’s in it for them.
- Make it Part of the Way You Do Things: Incorporate measurement into your culture so that performance improvement is expected and continuous. There is no “end” to the improvement game…individuals and teams should know where they stand and what they need to do to get better.
