What is Stopping You from Measuring Training?

We believe that, in order to become relevant, corporate learning and development must reinvent itself through business impact metrics.

Whether you are a business leader, an outside consultant, or in-house training expert, you need to provide compelling evidence that your learning solution delivers bottom-line business results. Do not be fooled into complacency even if you are not being currently asked for business outcomes. Eventually, someone will hold you accountable for connecting the dots between learning, on-the-job performance, and business impact.

Our recent training measurement poll holds good and bad news when it comes to training metrics. When we asked the question, “What is Stopping You from Measuring the Business Impact of Training?” This is what we heard:
36% - We do not know how
33% - It is too difficult

18% - It is too expensive
8% - We do not need to
    5% - Other
The bad news is that a third of those surveyed mistakenly believe that it is too difficult to measure skill adoption, performance improvement, and business impact. Another third lack the ability to make it happen. The good news is that, based upon over 600 training measurement projects, we know that training measurement can be done. We also know that the benefits greatly outweigh the costs as long as the initiatives are relevant to the business.

If you cannot calculate the business impact of your training yet, be prepared for some tough-to-answer questions.
