Take Observable Baby Steps for Giant Change

Every major training initiative should be seen through a large and small lens.

You need to be able to envision the grand future once the change has been accomplished.  You also need to understand what small steps (and wins) must occur along the way.

The small “baby” steps are the markers that will guide needed adjustments and monitor the impact of your intervention. In the training measurement world, we call these markers Observable and Measurable Behaviors – or Evidence.

Take these broad steps to move the needle:
  1. Identify the business metrics that you want to move, how far you want to move them and the value of the movement.
  2. Determine the critical few Observable and Measurable Behaviors most tied to moving those metrics.
  3. Understand the gaps between the current and desired Observable and Measurable Behaviors.
  4. Create a systemic plan to close and reinforce the gaps (i.e. knowledge, skills, attitudes, systems, processes, talent, culture and strategy.)
  5. Measure the adoption of the new behaviors and the impact on the metrics.
Establishing training measurement expectations up front, the small steps before and after, will keep your initiative on track to impacting the business.
